5 Minutes with Giovanna Lagana

In 5 Minutes, Giovanna Lagana. on February 27, 2010 at 10:18 am

“5 Minutes with…” is a section of the blog that is a a set of questions that are pretty much the same give or take a few. That are meant for us to get to know our favorite authors a little bit more. Some are funny, some have nothing to do with their books; while others hopefully get to the “nitty-gritty” of what the author is thinking. Now let’s give a Naughty Chick welcome to Giovanna Lagana.

Bio:

Giovanna Lagana is an award-winning freelance author and editor, who loves to work with authors on   their stories as well as to create her own. In both instances, she gets to escape reality and travel into   worlds of fiction to meet the most interesting and memorable characters.

She’s married to her loving husband, Ghislain, and is a proud mother of three beautiful children, named   Mathieu, Nicholas and Isabelle.

When she isn’t busy playing with her kids, writing or editing, she spends her time reading. It’s no   surprise that her bookshelves are overflowing with an ever-growing To-Be-Read booklist.

What project are you currently working on? (C’mon, give us a hint!)

Many. J I’m working on a few speculative fiction short stories that have been nagging me to be written. I’m writing the second book “A Child’s Secret” in my romantic suspense/horror series “With Black & White Comes the Grey”, too. It’s coming along quite nicely. I love the direction my characters and plot are headed this time around. The story and characters seem to have taken on a life of their own, which is great to see.

I’m also working behind the scene on other writing projects, as well as editing manuscripts; all fun stuff. And the good thing is if I get writer’s block or hit an obstacle along the way, I can jump to another project and then come back to the other one at a later date.

What is your favorite snack?

Right now, I’m really into Yoplait Source Exotik Selection yogurts. They’re yummy and only 35 calories per serving, so I can indulge. J

I have heard from numerous authors that chocolate is the staple of their diet. Is it in yours?

Used to be, but recently I realized it’s also one of the causes for my migraines, so I’m trying to stay away from it even though it tempts me every day. But there are days when I can’t help myself and sneak in one teeny, tiny piece. J

Will electronic readers ever take the place of the humble paperback?

There will always be a niche for the paperback, as there will always be a niche for hardcover books, but eBooks will eventually become the biggest money makers in the industry thanks to cool devices like Kindle.

If you could be one of your characters – Who would you be?  And why?

It would have to be a character I can relate to the best. I’d have to say I’d want to be like Jonathan James in Book 2 “The Child’s Secret” of my series. His mind keeps changing. One day he wakes up and sees the world in a haze of blue. The next he’ll wake up and see it tinted red. He, like myself, is always trying to find the truth in everything around him, and sometimes he’s too blind to see the truth even if it’s staring at him right in the face. I, on the other hand, am blind to the truth most of the time. J

Who or what influences you when you write?

My emotions, my thoughts, my fears, my loves, my hates, my likes, my experiences, and even my nightmares. One of the reoccurring nightmares Miriam James has in Book1 “The Battle of Armageddon” of a holocaustic world and the Grim Reaper riding in on horseback looking for her and her kin is a dream I had when I was eleven. I had it off and on for three consecutive months. And each time he tapped the window with his boney finger and lunged for me, I’d freak out and wake up. The effect was the same every time. I swore my heart would break out of my chest for how fast and hard it pounded.

When you have writer’s block how do you break free?

I go onto another project for a while and then come back to it at a later date. Hopefully, by then I can get back into the story. Sometimes, if I’m still having problems, then I change an aspect of the plot or alter a character’s progress a bit.

Who is your perfect hero?  And why?

You mean apart from my hubby? He’s my real life hero. J

But in the fictional worlds I create, there isn’t one perfect hero. He is a warped blend of many traits, quirks, habits, etc. But he is always considerate, respectful, and loving. Someone the heroine can talk to about her ideas, fears, interests, loves, etc. He commits to the relationship completely—mind, heart, body, and soul.

What do you do for inspiration?

My inspiration comes to me. I don’t go searching for it. It just pops into my head, whether because of an article I’ve read or a movie I saw, or sometimes it’s what happens to me. A spark of an idea or a character is born in my head and then a story and other characters follow after that.

Is there a genre of book you would like to write but haven’t yet?

There are many. I’m the type of person who likes to try many different things, experience life to its fullest. See the world in a different scope each day. The same goes with my writing, too. But I’d say the next genre I’d like to tackle would be a YA mystery.

What kind of research do you do for your books?  Do you enjoy the research process?

It varies with each project. Yes, I enjoy it, but I’m notorious for going off on tangents. I may start out researching one thing, but along the way something else related or pertaining to it will cross my path and I’ll go off and look into that, too. So on and so forth. That is one of my worst traits. And on very, very rare occasions, I see it as one of my best. Yeah, I’m complicated. J

What is your favorite movie of all time?  The one where you can watch it and still get affected at the same spots each and every time?

Oh, there are many. But I’d have to say my favorite would be Bridget Jones’s Diary. It is just too funny and it’s hard not to fall in love with the quirky, clumsy, ignorant, insecure, adorable Bridget character. I root for her every time and when she finally finds happiness at the end, I cheer.

Review: Boss with Benefits by Lelani Black

Boss with Benefits

Hot Honolulu bachelor Jack Sloane has finally fallen in love. Problem is, he can’t find his woman–a mysterious beauty who showed up after-hours at his Waikiki office is nowhere to be found. Worse, she doesn’t seem interested in a repeat of the erotic night they spent together. The one person who can help him find his heart’s desire is his frumpy secretary.

Dowdy office wallflower Keely St. John has no intention of fanning her gorgeous boss’s flame. It’s bad enough she’s spent the last three months fantasizing about him. To make things even more complicated, her “sister” spent one lusty night with the island tycoon! When Jack finds out Keely’s secret, she could lose more than just her job and a Boss With Benefits.

OK I’ll admit that I don’t usually review erotica for Rayna. I know she enjoys it far too much; however, the title of this book jumped out at me so I just had to have a read.  What made it even more interesting is that I read it at work in my downtime.  I would seriously recommend doing this because you can really “get into the scenes”.  Pity I’m married and don’t have a gorgeous boss or I just might have been tempted.  Add to the fact its summer here right now and the setting of the book is in Hawaii so again there was another reason why I found the book to be more realistic than far fetched.

Ms Black uses vivid details and teasing hints to move the story along instead of jumping straight into the sex scenes which is a great change. But when the sex scenes appear, wow, Wow, WOW! I really enjoyed the fact there was a story line with a plot with a beginning, middle and end rather than the all to common page after page of sex in all various positions that I have read in other erotica.   The characters are believable even though I will admit to rolling my eyes in the beginning.  That was my issue not the books lol.  I was really impressed by how much detail about Hawaii was dropped in throughout the read without breaking the flow of the story or seeming to be filler

Ms Black, anytime you want to send you work over to us to review, I’d be more than happy to volunteer.

Save Amanda Feral Giveaway

In contests, Mark Henry on February 24, 2010 at 11:32 am

Save Amanda Feral! Go out and Read Mark Henry!

Here is the deal. I want you to help me support Mark Henry, one of the most twisted authors I know, by buying one, two or even 10 copies of his book. Now I know with the economy people really can’t afford to buy that many or sometimes even one. So I am going to help you I am giving away a copy of each of his books, Road Trip of the Living Dead, Happy Hour of the Damned, and Battle of the Network Zombies; and the second prize is a $10.00 USD Amazon GC (gift certificate) this is open to international readers as well.   So that is two prizes, hopefully each helps out Mark.

Now it’s not going to be easy. There are a few rules, quid pro quos and crap like that.

First, if you already read the books go leave a review at www.amazon.com, help a brother out. If you have not read his books you’ll need to read the blurb about the new release, Battle of the Network Zombies, Mark has out as of the 23 of February and leave a comment on it here.

Blurb:

In Seattle’s undead circles, Amanda Feral is one of the beautiful zombies. Of course, when you’re socializing with werewolves, devils, and rampaging yetis, there’s not that much competition. Still, Amanda has a stylish rep to maintain, which is getting tricky now that her tanking ad agency is obliterating her finances. The fastest way to make some cash: appear on a new reality show, American Minions, hosted by lecherous wood nymph Johnny Birch. Classy? Maybe not, but a girl’s gotta eat.

With zombie gal pal Wendy posing as her bitchy agent, Amanda settles in to “Minions Mansion,” crowded with 24-7 video cameras and undead fame whores. When Johnny is found incinerated in a locked room, Amanda decides to channel her inner Miss Marple (minus the fugly cardigans) and find out who’s responsible. Was it Hairy Sue, the white trash stripper yeti? Tanesha, the glamorous trannie werewolf? Angie, the Filipino vampire with a detachable head? Unveiling the culprit in a heart-stopping finale won’t just save the show from cancellation, it might just keep Amanda alive—or as close as a ghoul can get…

Second, I am going to list three drinks from Happy Hour of the Damned, pick one that seems like something you would drink if you were a zombie with too much fashion sense and a lot of snarkiness.

  • Black Magic: Vodka, Kahlua, and  lemon Juice with a lemon twist
  • Flirtini: Fusion liqueur, vodka, Cointreau, cranberry and lime
  • The Well of Souls’ Green Demon: Vodka, Pinapple rum and Midori

And third, pass the word. We want to save Amanda and Save Mark’s sanity. Twitter, FaceBook, MySpace, groups, via hamster on wheels, anything that will help is much appreciated.

June: Gay and Lesbian Pride Month

In General on February 24, 2010 at 9:12 am

I know this is a way off month. But I decided to plan this one out because, frankly I don’t want to screw it up. June is coming and I want to do something great and fun and sexy and very naughty. We are going to have sex with everyone. Well not really but we are going to be reading and interviewing a lot of Gay and Lesbian Fiction here. And we will be going a lot of interviews to celebrate those authors that dare to write outside the box.

Presidential blurb:

In June of 2000, Bill Clinton deemed the month of June, “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.” The month was chosen to remember a riot in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan that is thought to be the beginning of the gay liberation movement in the United States. This month is meant to recognize the impact Gay, Lesbian and Transgender individuals have had on the world. June is now the month of acceptance and the month to welcome diversity in communities regardless of sexual orientation. Gay and lesbian groups celebrate this special time with pride parades, picnics, parties, memorials for those lost from HIV and AIDS, and other group gathering events that attract thousands upon thousands of individuals. The international impact has been so influential to so many people that it makes for a perfect time for an organization to be a part of the festivities.

So I am just brainstorming her and I need some help to figure out what to do. I want all the subject matter with in our realm of book reviewing covered. I also need guest bloggers; people willing to do some interviews; prizes to give away; and books to review; and most important I need readers and authors to help get the word out. Now we are not going to get on our soap-boxes and preach. (unless its about a better position and tantric exercises) But we are going to have fun and naughty. If you guys and gals have any ideas post them to me or email me at Rayna@naughtyeditions.com thanks.

5 Minutes with Lelanie Black

In 5 Minutes, Lelani Black on February 22, 2010 at 3:07 pm

Lelanie Black Bio:

Lelani Black was born and raised in the tropics and spent many lazy days on island beaches sunbathing. She met her mis-match at a club in Waikiki, Hawaii and they’ve been making beautiful loud music ever since with a handful of amazing kids and a dog named Mylee. While she and her software-developer husband live in Colorado, she goes home to the Hawaiian islands every chance she gets.

When not shuttling kids to games or motocross races, she’s gourmet cooking, gardening, or trying to grow wine grapes. She can be found in the midnight hour in front of her computer spinning spicy stories that require romantic backdrops and sexy heroes and heroines.

Please give a big naughty welcome to Lelani Black.

What project are you currently working on? A freaky faerie romp–she meets her match in a handsome, hot son-of-a-warlord, AND a cruise-ship all-aboard for sex-on-the-high-seas happily ever-after that I’m now finishing, and having way too much fun with both.

What is your favorite snack? McDonald’s apple pie.

I have heard from numerous authors that chocolate is the staple of their diet. Is it in yours? I am nothing without chocolate.

If you could be one of your characters – Who would you be?  And why? …Any one of my heroines because my gorgeous heroes give it to them for hours, and hours, lol…

Who or what influences you when you write? My husband; his dry humor, wit, expert-loverness about him etc…music, travel, people, the occasional headline–it sounds so broad but many elements can come together all at once to form a unique story.

When you have writer’s block how do you break free? I write a paragraph or two to remind me of what needs to happen next to move the story where it needs to go. This helps me see the block, (or find the missing, or weakened, link).

Who is your perfect hero?  And why? Stay at home dads! The economy seems to have impacted fathers in a big way, now its mama out in the workforce while more dads are home cooking, cleaning, caring for the children, and raising future heroes. Oh, have to put my hands up for Bono of U2 for his ability to promote philanthropy on a universal scale AND be a husband and daddy-rocker.

What kind of research do you do for your books?  Do you enjoy the research process? Travel plays big in my research because I get to visit family that live in exciting places. Still, a trip to the farmer’s market can fuel the imagination! I went to the farmer’s market to buy some bread late one morning, and the vendor, a six-foot blue-eyed handsome hunk was packing up his goods, getting ready to leave. I bought some cranberry bread—then he threw a huge bag of everything else together– baguettes, French breads—handed it to me and said see you later. He was leaving and didn’t want to haul his goodies back to the bakery. This makes for humorous story; who expects to see a hot guy at the farmer’s market, much less one that bakes fragrant, fluffy pillows of heaven on earth?  Oh, and good old fashioned books from the library, thrift store, going on the internet—part of research is life experiences, or lifestyle. Sensual/erotic scenes are practiced on my husband. He’s a happy test subject. When I’m on vacation, I’m doing research.

What is your favorite movie of all time?  The one where you can watch it and still get affected at the same spots each and every time? I can’t have just one, Rayna! Most recent crazy comedy would be Forgetting Sarah Marshall—it affects me in that I laugh my butt off, plus its setting is beautiful Hawaii, drama would be the Titanic/James Cameron type movies.

What is your favorite way to relax after a hard day working and writing? Cooking a gourmet meal with my husband in our beautiful kitchen, curling up in bed with a glass of wine and a good book, and the “OBVIOUS.”

What is the one era you would love to go visit and why? Ancient Rome, their young ladies may have been able to pick and choose whom they married, and it seemed to be a society that understood hygiene/cleanliness.

What is your perfect pizza? Thick crust, cheese drenched and dribbly with crisped pepperoni fat, ‘shrooms, fragrant red onions and slivers of bell peppers, and it whispers “eat me…”

Out of all your books, do you have a favorite one? Boss With Benefits, available February 19th 2010 from The Wild Rose Press  www.thewilderroses.com

What character out of all your books is the closest to your personality? Maybe the heroine in Boss With Benefits, but each leading lady in my sexy-tails has something about her that is unique to her. It’s the heroes that get to pushing these ladies’ buttons, or…yanking their tails!

Have you ever been nervous over reader reaction when a new book comes out? Yes, but my rhinoceros skin is tough. Confident. Deadly. I think. I have yet to experience that as my book is due to be released in a couple of weeks. I’ll let you know. What helps me calm my nerves is knowing that my book, before it sold, had to get a thumbs up from other editors in the genre or sub-genre, and the ultimate thumbs up from total experts; other readers.

How much does reader response mean to you over your books? A lot, but I don’t expect someone who doesn’t enjoy erotic romance to love or admire my artform. To me, an ideal reader is someone who can appreciate all genres. Erotic romance is a very intimate experience, too. You’ve invited the reader to watch, smell, taste, feel…

What do you hope readers get from your books after they read them? An orgasm.

If you could make a movie of any one of your books which one would you choose and who would you cast at the h/h? I LOVE THIS QUESTION!! It would be my untitled, unsold but nearly finished freaky faerie fantasy. It involves different worlds, otherworldly creatures, superhero sex, a rock singer, a blanket, a gypsy— hot actors/actresses would be employed! Delirious-hot Denzel Washington would be a warlord, cause I love me some Denzel. I am drawing a blank for the male lead, Daniel Craig maybe? Cause I love me some Daniel, too, lol. The female leads hmmm…I see Megan Fox’s face for one of them, just with waaayy more guts and attitude, she’d need these things to deal with Daniel Craig’s charisma.

What is your favorite color besides YELLOW? I know everyone loves yellow. Ha-ha, vivid flame orange-yellow, watcha think of that? And the vibrant avocado greens you see on digital cameras and Jeeps.

Boxers or briefs? Bikini cut briefs, the occasional thong but it rides up the ass, and I don’t like things riding up my ass all the time.

Red Pill or Blue Pill? Blue, the help-me-sleepy kind and only on occasion.

I want to thank Lelani for letting me interview her and good luck with the new release. You can find Lelani at her blog and website.

Blog Tour: Accidentally Demonic Giveaway

In Blog Tour, contests on February 17, 2010 at 9:49 pm

I have one and its an awesome book. Here’s the low down:

The devilish new novel from the national bestselling author of The Accidental Human

When mild-mannered Casey Schwartz wakes up in jail, she has no memory of how she got there. But after her sister, Wanda, bails her out, Casey has more to deal with than a foggy memory-like abrupt mood swings and fireballs shooting from her fingertips. But things really head south when a vampire shows up on her doorstep…

Vampire Clayton Gunnersson is seriously hot. And seriously taken-by a demon. In a ritual gone wrong, Clayton tried to get rid of his unwanted bond, but spilled some demonic blood on Casey, getting her possessed in the process. Now, Casey has to share her body and manage to keep her growing attraction to Clayton in check, because falling for her demon’s boyfriend just might get Casey killed-from the inside out.

And I can’t wait to read her upcoming release My Way to Hell coming July 6, 2010.

Interview with JoMarie Degioia, Romantic Author

In 5 Minutes, Historical on February 17, 2010 at 9:07 pm

JoMarie Degioi AKA Josie Dennis writes steamy Historical romance novels with a touch of mystery. She’s a member of RWA, Space Coast Authors of Romance and From the Heart Romance Writers.  She will also chair the for the annual RWA conference in Nashville, TN July, 2010.

I want to thank JoMarie for taking the time to interview with us today. I am excited to have her here with us. She is a new author so give her some love.
What project are you currently working on?

I’m writing a very sexy Regency-set Historical featuring a hero who is seeking revenge using the only instrument he believes available to him: his power of seduction.  This guy is more than he seems, as I’m discovering daily!

If you could be one of your characters – Who would you be?  And why?

I think living in Michelle’s slippers (in PRIDE AND FIRE) would be a kick.  Having a hot devoted husband who lets you speak your mind when other ladies of your acquaintance are stifled?  To me there’s nothing sexier.

Who or what influences you when you write?

Sometimes a song on the radio will spark something in my current work-in-progress.  Mostly characters and situations just seem to form of their own volition.  Weird.

When you have writer’s block how do you break free?

I don’t believe in true writer’s block, but I have been blocked by a scene or two.  Usually it’s because there’s really no need for it or I’ve written it in the wrong character’s point of view.  It can take a while to figure out what’s wrong, though.  Grr.

What do you do for inspiration?

I watch the BBC production of Pride & Prejudice.  I like to do this when I have a day off, so I can watch all five and a half hours at one shot!

Is there a genre of book you would like to write but haven’t yet?

I think Young Adult would be a challenge, but my darn characters are too old.  And they like to get naked!

What kind of research do you do for your books?

Internet, books on History, old maps.  For my current WIP I had to know about the history of mining in Cornwall in the early 19th century.  Fascinating stuff, and it really gave me an insight into my hero’s motivation.  Do you enjoy the research process?  Gosh, yes.  Though research can be a huge time sucker.

Out of all your books, do you have a favorite one?  If not, then which one is closest to.

The sequel to PRIDE AND FIRE has who is still the favorite hero I’ve written, Paul’s friend Lord Roberts.  Charming, solicitous, strong.  And he has no idea that the perfect woman was under his nose the whole time.

What character out of all your books is the closest to your personality?

Though I lack her stunning beauty (mine is less subtle, LOL) I identify with Michelle from PRIDE AND FIRE.  Spunky and outspoken and determined.

What do you hope readers get from your books after they read them?

Pure enjoyment.  And I want them to have that “hot eye moment,” when you read something that nearly makes you cry.  I love that in the books I read and I strive for it in books I write.  And if they get turned on by the love scenes?  Yeah, that’s great too!

If you could make a movie of any one of your books which one would you choose and who would you cast at the h/h?

I think I’ve written one heck of a hero in a sexy Contemporary we’re shopping around right now.  He’s a Forest Ranger and it’s set in the Sierra Nevada.  Who would play him?  Jeffrey Dean Morgan.  Big, handsome, and those dimples?  Yum.

What is the weirdest thing a reviewer has ever said about one of your books?

One wrote “WTF” to describe the hero and heroine’s relationship.  Nice, huh?  Thankfully most others got them.

What is the nicest thing a reviewer has ever said about one of your books?

One reviewer stated that PRIDE AND FIRE was the first book of mine she read and it wouldn’t be the last!  She loved the characters and Michelle’s outspokenness.

Will electronic readers ever take the place of the humble paperback?

I don’t believe so.  As cool as the new eBooks are, I believe people like toting around a paperback, breaking the spine, feeling the pages, and truly experiencing the book.  I do, anyway.

Lady Michelle Thomas is a spirited heiress, piqued with the rules of Society which dictate that a woman must be seen and not heard.  And if she has opinions on politics or finances?  Well, she had best keep them to herself.  Sparks fly when she meets Paul and she believes she’s found a man interested in more than her face, form and finances.

They wed, but when Paul refuses to take her very generous dowry she’ll do anything to see her money settled on him.  Even if it means going to his rival and putting more than his career in jeopardy.

After reading an excerpt in the back of one of Christine Feehan’s books, I rushed out and bought the first two books : Lord of the Fading Lands and Lady of Light and Shadows, then left them sitting in the “To Be Read” pile as I was afraid that the books would let me down.  Boy, I could kick myself for waiting so long.  From then on, I got wrapped up in these books.  I have read them numerous times and when you consider I write reviews and don’t often have time to re-read books. For me to find the time to re-read these books should be a testament to how good they really are.

Ms Wilson’s world building is reminiscent of one of my all time favourite authors Anne McCaffrey and it was no surprise to find that Ms Wilson names Ms McCaffrey as a favourite author of hers.  The attention to detail, of what to me, appears to be a complex and complicated world is nothing short of inspiring.  I have read bad reviews about this book where people have complained that there is no HEA in it; however this book is a fantasy. I didn’t know that a HEA is a must have for a fantasy book.  It’s a sweeping love story people, get over it.  I personally would rather have a suggestive read (which this book and the others in the series are in spades) than perhaps the loss of world building and detail that rushing to a HEA might bring about.

As an avid fan, I already knew that this book wasn’t the completion and that there is another book to come.  It gives more of Ellie and Rain’s back stories, and makes both of them well rounded characters.  It also highlights just how far Rain has come from when he scorched the world.  There is a mellowing of Rain even whilst he struggles with what he knows is to come. The tension is rising now and after reading this book, my mind was racing for days. I couldn’t pick up another because my mind was just too caught up in the possibilities about what can be in book five.

All in all, I loved learning more about the Elves and I can’t wait to see what Ms Wilson throws into the mix next.  I’ll come right out and admit it, I cried when reading a certain part of this book.  Who am I kidding? I cried more than once and I’m not ashamed.  There are not many books that bring me to tears but this shows just how deeply connected I am to the characters and the story.  I loved this book and all the other books Ms Wilson has written. Bring on Book 5, Tarien Soul. Mei’felani. Bei’santi. Nehtah, bas desrali!
