Caleb is a man with a singular interest in revenge. Kidnapped as a young boy and sold into slavery by a power-hungry mobster, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. For twelve years he has immersed himself in the world of pleasure slaves searching for the one man he holds ultimately responsible. Finally, the architect of his suffering has emerged with a new identity, but not a new nature. If Caleb is to get close enough to strike, he must become the very thing he abhors and kidnap a beautiful girl to train her to be all that he once was.
Eighteen-year-old Olivia Ruiz has just woken up in a strange place. Blindfolded and bound, there is only a calm male voice to welcome her. His name is Caleb, though he demands to be called Master. Olivia is young, beautiful, naive and willful to a fault. She has a dark sensuality that cannot be hidden or denied, though she tries to accomplish both. Although she is frightened by the strong, sadistic, and arrogant man who holds her prisoner, what keeps Olivia awake in the dark is her unwelcome attraction to him.
WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious consent, strong language, and graphic violence.

I’m not sure that “dark read” can accurately describe this book. Human trafficking is always a dark subject, but this one goes further. Can the one being held captive REALLY having feelings of love, compassion for the captor? Is it Stockholm syndrome? This book takes you on an emotion journey that you might not normally want to go. This isn’t a book with a Happily Ever After or fairy tale ending. This book is the mental exploration of a kidnapped young woman who is being abused, trained and primed to be sold as a sex slave to a vicious, murdering drug lord and her captor that struggles with his past abuses and newly found feelings for his trainee, all while planning and executing his ultimate revenge.

Plot: 5. This story is simply amazing. It follows quiet and shy Olivia through her torturous captivity by the hauntingly beautiful Caleb. Caleb, a human trafficker and slave trainer, has kidnapped Olivia to auction off to a Russian mobster who has wronged Caleb’s “family.” In doing so, Caleb will be finally be able to get the revenge he has dreamed of for years. Little did he expect to find out that Olivia was not so easily trainable and that he grows to care for the girl, as she grows to care for him. Captive in the Dark tells the story of what systematic abuse does to a person(s) and how everyone reacts and processes abuse differently.
Sex: 3. The sex in this book is mostly abusive. Even though Olivia grows to enjoy some of it, it is mostly sexual abuse used as a sort of behavior modification—be a good girl and you get to orgasm. This is an s/M story so there is bondage, corporal punishment, sensory deprivation and multiple partners participating in various sex acts, with various devices. Some of the scenes were really hot, while some where disturbing and scary.
Overall: 5. I was held captive by the author’s ability to create such an emotional character study. At times I felt scared, heartbroken, sad, joyful (only once or twice really), but I felt everything that the characters did. I could not help but become emotionally connected to Caleb and Olivia because it’s such a sad tale and you want to see them overcome their situations. I highly recommend this book despite it sounding like such a sad tale. It’s absolutely fascinating and leaves you with a huge cliffhanger. Ultimately, I believe this story is not about kidnapping, abuse and torture, but one of perseverance, holding on to hope and forgiveness and love. While certainly not for the faint of heart, this is a wonderful story that I hope many will look past the dark subject matter and give it a go. It’s wonderfully written and will leave you dying to see what happens next.

Review: Beyond Shame by Kit Rocha

A dangerous world of sex, lust and violence…

All Noelle Cunningham has ever wanted is a life beyond-beyond the walls of Eden, where only the righteous are allowed to remain, and beyond her stiflingly restrictive existence as a councilman’s daughter. But only ruins lie outside the City, remnants of a society destroyed by solar storms decades earlier.

The sectors surrounding Eden house the corrupt, the criminal-men like Jasper McCray, bootlegger and cage fighter. Jas clawed his way up from nothing to stand at the right hand of Sector Four’s ruthless leader, and he’ll defend the O’Kane gang with his life. But no fight ever prepared him for the exiled City girl who falls at his feet.

Her innocence is undeniable, but so is their intense sexual attraction, and soon they’re crossing every boundary Noelle barely knew she had. But if she wants to belong to Jas, first she’ll have to open herself to a world where passion is power, and freedom is found in submission.

Review: ***Possible Spoilers***

Okay, three words: Oh. My. God! I think I have third degree burns from this book. To say it was hot is the understatement of the year! I usually pass on Urban Fantasy novels-I hate learning the quirks of a new world. I’m so glad I stuck this one out. This is chick-porn at it’s finest.

Noelle, a sheltered girl from the city of Eden, is kicked out of the protective city walls and left for dead in Sector 4. There is she rescued by Jasper, 1st Lieutenant in the O’Kane gang. The attraction and chemistry between these two is instantaneous. From there, the story is a struggle between the innocence that Noelle possesses, the deep-seeded need to let go and understand the “cravings and needs” that she desperately desires.

Plot: 4. Being an Urban Fantasy, it was packed with action along with a slight bit of traditional romance and a whole heck of a lot of sex. This story concentrates on Noelle being kicked out of the city and being hunted by those that wish she would have died on the streets of Sector 4 instead of falling into the arms of the protective O’Kane gang. There is a bit of political intrigue, mystery in this story as well. It kept me hooked from beginning to end.

Sex: 5, but I want to give it a 10! This was one of, if not THE hottest book I’ve ever read that wasn’t just pure erotica, with no story or plot. There is damn near every type of sex you can imagine in this book. There is bondage, D/s, corporal punishments, orgies, ménage à trois, anal, good grief, you name it. The scenes that were set were perfectly described and written in a way that was deliciously explicit, but not trashy. Some were even a bit sweet. WOW, just WOW!

Overall: 5. I really cannot say enough about how good this book is. Now, if you only like a little sex with your books, this isn’t for you. Honestly, sex is probably the main character in this book. HA! I really enjoyed all of the characters in the book and I’m dying to see this series is going to play out. Mrs. Rocha has really set the stage for an exciting story full of action, violence, intrigue and heaven help me, tons of ridiculously dirty sex. This is on track to become one of my favorite series this year, if not ever. Look for my review of book 2, Beyond Control because it’s moving to the top of my TBR list now!

Review: Feel the Rush by Kelsie Leverich

FTRcoverFeel the Rush

A Hard Feelings Novel

by Kelsie Leverich

The New York Times bestselling author of The Valentine’s Arrangement continues her sizzling series with a new novel of a plan that goes awry—in the arms of a soldier….

Picking the wrong men is a talent Meagan Mitchell has perfected. She’s sweet, confident, beautiful—and single. With her thirtieth birthday sneaking up on her, she needs a new plan. No more Mr. Wrongs or Mr. Bads. It’s time to find Mr. Safe….

Army captain Reed Porter lives for the thrill—an Airborne Jumpmaster with a rush addiction. He’s sexy and playful, and he quickly tempts Meagan with his rich Southern drawl and sinful looks. But slowing down and settling down are not on his agenda, making him exactly the type of man Meagan wants to avoid.…

As their undeniable attraction heats up, Meagan has to decide if she’s willing to risk everything on a chance at love with a reckless charmer. Is she brave enough to bet her future—and her heart—on Mr. Thrill? Or will Reed finally learn that the feeling of a safe landing is just as addicting as the rush of the fall?

Plot: 5. I love a hot military romance. What was really interesting about this one was that Meagan and Reed have a past—a hot one. Years before, they had a one night stand and fate/luck whatever you want to call it, brings them together again. When Meagen’s best friend gets transferred to a different base, Meagan decides that a change of scenery will do her some good and maybe she’ll be able to find a “safe” man. Guess who her new neighbor is. Yes, the ridiculously sexy, thrill-seeking hottie, Reed Porter. While Meagan remembers him, but he doesn’t remember her. The feeling of watching lovers reconnect was amazing.
Sex: 4. I was able to quickly connect with the characters, I was able to really “feel” the build up to the inevitable. (It’s a romance novel. Of course there is sex in it!) I loved the well-paced the story was and how the sex got progressively hotter and hotter. The scenes were believable and intimate and had me blushing at times.
Overall: 5. Mrs. Leverich really knows how to weave a believable and well written story. The story had me laughing in places, holding my breath at times and wanting to throw my Kindle across the room once or twice. Meagan and Reed seemed so familiar to me, like old friends or neighbors and I was rooting for them, despite the twists and turns that they had to deal with. Several new characters are introduced and I can’t wait to see who the next book is going to be about.

My very favorite and first romance novel I ever read is Iris Johansen’s The Beloved Scoundrel published September 1994. I keep buying this book every three or four years. I absolutely love this book because it has hot sex, crazy family members, adventure, mystery, seduction, tragedy, and a great love story.
And I want to share my love of this book and a signed copy of Animal Attraction, an anthology. Signed by all four authors, Lori Foster, Heidi Betts, Maisey Yates and Jules Bennett. All you have to do to enter is tell me your favorite go-to novel.

Free Reads- 1 None that I could find on the main website or their blog. Perhaps it is the author’s job to handle their own promo.

Social Networks- 3 As you can see above Black Velvet Seductions has a Facebook, Pinterest page and Twitter account. On their blog they have many giveaways by not just the BVS authors but many guest authors too.

Website- 3 I felt that the rating of a three was high for them, the only reason I am giving a three s because the blog is pretty nice contests guest bloggers and information about new releases. Th main website however needs work.

I don’t know any other book publisher that doesn’t sell their own books on their own website. But it seems BVS doesn’t sell books. They link to other site that sell their authors books. I don’t like it.

And what is with all the different mailing lists BVS has? I counted four, for readers, writers, reviewers and bloggers, and advance notice of chats newsletter.?!

Overall Experience: 2 Solid rating for a weird hog-pog site. I just seems like the main site is an after thought of the blog. BVS has listed information about the blog, the books ( all the books are on one webpage) submission guidelines and social media page (it’s blank though) and a learn from the editors page (free lessons in writing for BVS). In contrast, the blog, while it has a no frills approach is still packed with loads of information and contests and is geared for the reader.
