Sex: 0 (None that I read, but man I could have added some and would not think less of Cassie)
Plot: 5 I can not say anything without saying something to spoil it for others.
Overall Enjoyment: 5
Wow and WTH! are common words I use to describe the reading of this book or any book in the series. Some parts I wanted to skip and some parts I wanted more in-depth information on. But I have found that Ms. Chance has a tendency to take the obscure references to info or people from previous books and expound on them in the next books. And between this series and her other series she crosses over a few times.
(River Song voice) ***Spoilers!***
At the end of this book is a real big cliff hanger. And if you are a Docter Who fan all I am going to say is “Rose Tyler I….” is almost exactly how this went down.
John and Cassie are very much the same and the Doctor and Rose if you think about it.
Fantasy, M/M, Erotic Romance
After Vorgell the barbarian f!@#s himself with a unicorn horn, he ends up in a cell with Maddog, a pretty young thief. It’s lust at first sight for Vorgell—but honestly, he can’t help it. Unicorn horn is a potent aphrodisiac, and now he can’t stop thinking about sex. Luckily, Madd is one male witch who knows how to put Vorgell’s new magical body to good use when he tricks Vorgell into a kiss that helps them escape.
Vorgell may desire sex in general—and Madd in particular—but Madd has no intention of being screwed by a man twice his size. He has problems of his own, including an enchanted collar that causes him to desire his most hated enemy. He wants that collar off as soon as possible, but that requires stealing a basilisk egg from the castle they just escaped.
Drawn together by lust and magic, the two men join forces and soon find themselves up to their necks in witches, wizards, and trouble. Vorgell and Madd might just be perfect for each other, but first they have to survive long enough to find out.
Overall Enjoyement: 4.5
I picked this book up at GRL2013 in print due to the first line of this blurb. A barbarian fucking himself with a unicorn horn? Um, heck yeah! That sounds just crazy enough I had to buy it. What I quickly realized was that line was a trick meant to make a reader do exactly what I did—buy the book.
However this was no ploy meant to sell a lousy book. THICK AS THIEVES is a great read which I could not put down. As a life-long fantasy reader, I was thrilled to get a fantasy m/m. Complete with barbarians, dungeons, unicorns, basilisks, and oh yeah! MAGIC!
I will not give spoilers about how this unicorn horn fucking incident propels the story—hey blurbs are hard to write and this one deserves to be rewarded by teasing you to buy the book—but I will tell you it is not as nefarious as one might imagine. It is actually a clever way of mingling sexy with fantasy.
Vorgell is the unfortunate barbarian who fucks a unicorn horn, inadvertently absorbing magic which makes him not only a giant horndog, but it also makes him extremely valuable to any witch that might want to use him for ill purposes. Vorgell gets himself arrested and Madd is the young witch who finds himself stuck in a cell with the giant, horny barbarian. Being clever, Madd uses Vorgell’s unicorn-magic infused blood to free them both. Then the adventure begins.
Unlikely traveling companions thrust together by unique situations, soon both men realize they need each other. Vorgell is a living breathing reservoir of magic because the unicorn horn dissolved in his body, enchanting his blood and his cum. And he’s crazy horny. 24/7/365. If anyone learned about Vorgell and the magic running in his veins, the barbarian’s life would be forfeit. Madd isn’t interested in being the giant man’s bitch and he manages to resist his powerful advances. But he could use the other man’s help. The evil Baron Flemgu placed a magic submission collar on Madd, and he would do anything to get it off. With Vorgell’s help, he might be able to do it. In order to do that, they will have to make deals with thieves and female witches, some who would rather see Madd dead. But getting the collar off is no easy task. They need to get a basilisk egg from Flemgu’s castle. A man hell bent on getting his witch slave back, Flemgu isn’t pleased Madd magicked boils all over his face and he will stop at nothing to get reveng—so going back to his castle is a risky plan. Vorgell’s strength can protect them on their journey but more importantly, when Madd needs an extra boost to his magic… well? Sex is the best way to get it.
Intermingled within a well-developed fantasy world, there is a real attachment forming between Vorgell and the sarcastic witch, Madd. The romance was not forced, but flowed naturally. Though Vorgell will screw anything and anyone, his attraction to Madd and his desire to protect him is genuine. I loved, loved the way Tali Sencer shook up typical m/m roles by making Vorgell a bottom in secret. This suits Madd’s needs after an aggressive sexual past of being forced due to his small size. Both men are surprised to find that the other one is exactly what the other one needs. The sex was spicy but not over the top which complimented the style of the book. The only thing that stops me from giving this book a 5star was the occasional use of modern dialog mixed in with old timey terms like “son of a she-ox.” The modern terminology like “pervy” and “jerking off” drew me out of the story a little, but not enough to put it down. An honest to goodness fantasy, there is just enough sweetness and humor in the romance to make THICK AS THIEVES a must-read for any m/m fan and fantasy lover. It had a HEA and a satisfying ending, but there are stories in this world that are not finished.
I am looking forward a sequel and sure hope one is in the works.
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Sex: 3 average lone mile high initiation and hotel fling.
Plot: 2 Mutual satisfaction.
Overall Enjoyment: 3 NO HEA just a hot encounter between two people.
Plot: 2 Confusing
Overall Enjoyment: 2.5 I found the dialogue to interfere too much in the story. I felt it did not help the story. It was stiff and just did not fit the characters.
Plot: 3 The plot and ending are predictable.
Sex: 3 Sex scenes not as intense as some of Ms Walkers other books. These were tame and quick.
Overall Enjoyment: 3 I believe the books could have ended 20 or so pages earlier. It dragged on a lot longer than needed.
EXCERPT (in which the stage is set)
Medford Abbey, Kent- 1785A sharp rap soon sounded on the door. Ludovic, Viscount DeVere glanced up from his periodical to the entrance of a liveried footman. “A message for you, my lord.” The servant offered the wax-sealed missive on a silver salver. “It was delivered by a most…unusual…courier.” The footman gave a sniff of disdain.”Indeed? What do you mean?” Ludovic asked in a bored drawl.”‘Tis a behemoth blackamoor, my lord.””Mustafa?” Ludovic threw down his periodical and snatched up the missive. “What the devil?””He awaits in the kitchen. Insufferable rude creature he be. Just stands all akimbo. Refuses to speak or to depart without an answer from your lordship.”
“The man cannot speak. He has no tongue. They took it when they castrated the poor devil.”The footman’s eyes bulged. He involuntarily crossed his legs. Ludovic broke the seal and scanned the contents with a deepening frown.
Most honored Efendi,
It is with the greatest humility that I appeal to he who once safeguarded my life. It is with exceeding distress that I must entreat you once more, being much in need of a friend and protector.
Your most devoted and obedient servant,Salime
Ludovic read the cryptic note once more. Salime in want of a protector? What a sticky situation that created. At first he wondered why she’d appealed to him, but then again, there were few people she trusted. Given their shared history, he would never deny her aid. Moreover, Salime had been instrumental in helping him to achieve his present state of connubial bliss. For that alone he owed her his undying gratitude.
“Tell him I shall be in touch with his mistress shortly…and that she should notify me at once should her circumstances become any more…distressed.”
“Aye, my lord.” The much-chagrinned footman departed.
Ludovic glowered after the departing servant. Salime had never been in want since coming to London. He wondered what could be behind her request, but then abandoned both letter and the dilemma the moment another surprise came bursting into his library. “Ned?” Ludovic leaped up to greet his best friend. “What the devil has brought you all the way from Yorkshire to Kent?””I have most portentous news, DeVere,” Ned sputtered with excitement. “News I could hardly relay by messenger. So I came down myself.””What kind of news? Out with it, Chambers,” Ludovic commanded.
“Mayhap you should pour us a drink first.”
Ludovic lifted a sardonic brow. “A drink? Not so urgent after all?”
“‘Tis fortification you’ll need for the shock you’re about to receive.”
“Shock? Me? You know I am not easily shocked, Ned.” Ludovic paused with his hand on the brandy decanter and a slight frown marring his face. “Come to think of it, I’m damned if I can recall a single occasion that has wrought from me such a profound reaction as shock.”
Ned flung himself into Ludovic’s favorite chair. “There’s a first for everything, DeVere. Now that drink?”
Ludovic sloshed amber liquid into two glasses, handing one to the would-be herald, who downed it in one draught. Ludovic quirked a brow.
“It was a devilish long ride,” Ned explained.
“All to deliver this shocking report of yours?” Ludovic perched a hip on the corner of his mahogany desk.
“Yes! It’s Lazarus all over again!”
“Lazarus? Am I to surmise that someone has been miraculously raised from the dead?”
“Actually, he might as well have been,” Ned declared. “I can hardly countenance it after all this time.”
“You are trying my patience, Ned.”
“It’s Simon. He’s returned.”
“Good God!” The glass slipped from his hand to shatter at Ludovic’s feet. “You can’t mean Sin is alive after all this time? He was pronounced killed in action six years ago.”
“I mean exactly that!” Ned exclaimed. “He is indeed alive and may even be in London as we speak. I have the news straight from Baron Singleton. His ship was expected to arrive several days ago.”
“Why am I only hearing of this now? I see the bloody Singleton regularly at Parliament.”
“Probably because the good baron doesn’t like you, DeVere. He believes you were an abominable influence on his son.”
“Then he would be right.” Ludovic smirked and then stared at the shattered glass at his feet.
“Looking a bit white there, my friend. This is known as shock.”
“Admittedly, I am incredulous. How can this be? Where the devil has he been?”
“Interned as a prisoner of war for the greater part of six years.”
“Six years? In all that time there were no exchanges?”
“Very few. The colonials refused to give up ours when they claimed their men were only released on the point of starvation and death. I daresay ’tis no exaggeration. I’ve seen a number of reports on the deplorably inhumane conditions of our prison hulks. Indeed it’s said that the colonial prisoners set fire to the Whitby, choosing to go down in flames, rather than die of starvation and disease.” Ned shook his head. “What a hellish business war is.”
“But if Sin was a prisoner, he should have been released nigh on a year ago when the treaty was signed.”
“Apparently he was too ill to travel. Only made it as far as Bermuda before he was struck with the bloody flux or some such and required months of convalescence…poor sod.”
“We must go to him, Ned. At once.””He’ll not be the same man,” Ned voiced what they were both thinking.”No,” Ludovic shook his head. “Likely never again.”

Who can Kara Gillian trust?
That’s what she’d like to know. Demon summoner and now a consultant for the FBI, Kara Gillian has spent the past several months in the demon realm training while recovering from the treachery of the demonic lord Rhyzkahl. Yet though the torment and betrayal she suffered at his hands continues to plague her, she’s not about to let that slow her down.
Kara returns to Earth to search for a fellow summoner being held by allies of Rhyzkahl. Aiding in the hunt are Kara’s friends, FBI agents Ryan Kristoff and Zack Garner. However, Kara and Zack know Ryan’s true identity—though he himself does not—and questions of loyalty threaten to tear apart their previously close-knit group. Rhyzkahl’s machinations run deeper than they could have ever imagined, and the search for the missing summoner takes on a desperate edge while dangers from ancient demon oaths loom and enemies increase in power and numbers.
Armed with her skills, wit, and attitude, it is up to Kara to save her friends and her world.
The price of failure will be her soul.
Sex: 2 There was some and it was left to the imagination and didn’t take away from the storyline. It showed us the depth of the relationship between Kara and Mzatal.
Plot: 5 As we get in to the book the past comes back to haunt the reader. Questions I had from previous books in this series were answered and lots more doubts came to surface with the powerful climax toward the end of the book. It seems to me the more Kara tries to reclaim herself as a cop and summoner the more we notice that she has a bigger destiny than anyone could have envisioned.
Every time something happens to Kara it fits in to some bizarre puzzle only the Ancients from before the demon lords knows. With all the murders, kidnappings and freak accidents that happen around Kara and her family, they seem to be a coincidence. In this book we start to see a pattern starting with the grandparents that died or almost died in that disastrous summoning of Rhyzkahl. Then to add to our ever growing excitement she adds some new characters to the cast. They grow on you.
I think I am going to go back through all the books and make one of those crime/evidence/witness/whodunit boards we see on the cop shows like Castle.
Overall Enjoyment: 5 I really love this series. I met Ms Rowland at a conference at the debut of the first in the series. And then I won the second book in the series and was hooked. I will continue to read about Kara and her Posse until the bitter end.
